All Star competitive cheerleading is what most people recognise as ‘Bring It On’ style cheerleading seen in the movies. It is a fast paced and exciting sport that incorporates stunting, tumbling, basket tosses and dance into a 2 minute and 30 second routine to dynamic music. All Star cheerleading is one of the fastest growing sports in Australia, and Melbourne Cheer Academy is one of the largest dedicated cheer gyms in the country.
All Star cheerleading teams differ from some other sports by training year-round for competitions in Australia, following the school calendar year from February to November. Every member of the team plays an important role, and athletes may be a flyer, base, back spot, tumbler – or a little bit of everything! All Star teams typically consist of between 12 and 32 athletes, and squads can be either co-ed or all girl. At competitions the teams are divided by both age and ability level. Cheerleading routines are judged by a panel of judges on difficulty, execution, creativity, and showmanship. Competitions are the focus point of the sport, and they are an opportunity for teams to demonstrate all the hard work they put in during class. Melbourne Cheer Academy athletes typically participate in four competitions throughout the year, but there are also extra opportunities to compete nationally and even internationally. Anyone who is interested can try out for an MCA team – everyone makes a team!
Teams are divided into different age and difficulty levels, typically decided by what tumbling skills an athlete has. At Melbourne Cheer Academy we offer the following levels, and we help coach and guide athletes to gain new skills to move through the levels as they increase their confidence and experience.
Level 1 – suitable for complete beginners, no previous experience necessary
Level 1 Elite – suitable for athletes with front and back walkovers
Level 2 – suitable for athletes with front handsprings, back handsprings and round off backhandsprings
Level 3 – suitable for athletes with multiple standing backhandsprings, punch fronts and round of back tucks
Level 4 – suitable for athletes with standing back tucks, multiple backhandspring back tucks and round off layouts
Level 5 – suitable for athletes with jump tucks, round off full twisting layouts and specialty tumbling passes
All Star cheerleading is a fantastic sport that helps to develop co-ordination, strength, flexibility and fitness. At Melbourne Cheer Academy a big focus is also placed on developing important ‘life skills’ such as sportsmanship, teamwork and confidence.
